Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) Closure

PATENT FORAMEN OVALE (PFO) CLOSURE

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure involves closing a small tunneled hole in the heart that has been linked to an increased risk of stroke. During this procedure, a small incision in the made in the groin and a tube is passed up through the leg vessels to the right side of the heart. The tube is then passed through the small hole (PFO) in the heart to the left side of the heart. A device is then positioned and released to help “seal off” this tunneled hole. In selected patients, this has been shown to reduce the risk of recurrent strokes.
