Pulmonary Hypertension

PULMONARY HYPERTENSION

Pulmonary hypertension is a disease process that largely affects the right side of the heart (the right ventricle) due to an overload of resistance in the pulmonary artery and its blood vessels that enter into the lungs. If you have been struggling with shortness of breath, lightheadedness with exerting yourself, swelling in your abdomen and legs, getting full quickly when eating and passing out with exertion, you might want to ask your doctor if you have pulmonary hypertension.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare but serious medical illness which can be life threatening. There are 5 (five) major classification categories established by the World Health Organization that help us categorized patients with pulmonary hypertension based on the mechanism of the disease process. Depending on the mechanism of disease development, treatments are becoming more targeted with ever improving outcomes. With current therapies, we can significantly improve the symptoms that patients experience, the quality of life, and exertional capacity. Getting to the root of cause of why the pulmonary pressures are elevated helps your physician decide what medications may or may not be helpful for you as a patient.

Here at Heart Care Centers of Illinois, Dr. James Sur is currently seeing patients in consultation for evaluation of pulmonary hypertension. He offers several years experience working with world experts in pulmonary hypertension during his fellowship at the University of Chicago and University of Michigan. He has been caring for patients with pulmonary hypertension, contributing to research and exploring new therapies and interventions that can be offered to patients with pulmonary hypertension for over 9 years now at HCCI. Integrating a thorough assessment, his clinical experience, and true care for his patients we have been able to help hundreds of patients with this serious disease.
