After participating in this program, physicians should be able to:

What Primary Care Physicians Need to Know about Congenital Heart Disease:

  • Explain the common cyanotic and acyanotic congenital heart defects and their expected survival to adulthood.
  • Understand the concept of residual sequelae in regards to congenital heart disease.
  • Comfortably approach the adult patient with congenital heart disease using lesion specific guidelines.

Evolving Therapies for Atrial Fibrillation: The Pulmonary Vein Isolation Procedure

  • Recognize the different clinical presentations of atrial fibrillation and how they relate to the pathophysiology of the disease.
  • List the indication, success rates, and potential complications of radiofrequency catheter pulmonary vein ablation for atrial fibrillation.
  • Identify appropriate candidates for radiofrequency catheter pulmonary vein ablation.

Carotid Stents - A New Way to Prevent Strokes

  • Evaluate anatomy of the aortic arch, great vessels, and carotid arteries.
  • Compare the published literature on carotid endarterectomy and carotid stenting.
  • Understand the current indications and contra-indications to carotid stenting.
